STEPS
Students who read their course materials are better prepared and participate more in class

Students often do not understand how important textbooks and study materials are to the successful completion of assignments, quizzes, and exams—and many try to complete their courses without cracking a book.

Easy steps to take

  • Hold the textbook up and tell your students that the materials will be used for tests, homework, and assignments
  • Distribute First-Day-of-Class flyers with your syllabus. See an example (Word).
  • Show PowerPoint presentations on key course technology. See an example (PPT).
  • Request a First-Day-of-Class presentation from your Houghton Mifflin sales rep. Your sales rep can talk with you about additional First-Day-of-Class presentation ideas.
